A federal district judge has agreed to stay an SEC civil suit against former Hamilton Bank chairman Eduardo Masferrer while regulators consider a verbal settlement offer. Already convicted of criminal fraud in connection with Hamilton's 2002 collapse, Masferrer received a 30-year prison sentence in July. SEC attorney Christopher Martin requested the stay to see what financial penalties are imposed in the criminal case before acting on the civil settlement offer. Criminal penalties could reach $30 million.
