State officials have charged that dozens of Rite Aid stores in New Jersey sold expired infant formula, baby food and over-the-counter medications. "It is unconscionable that a store would sell expired merchandise ... to unsuspecting consumers who rely on these products for the care and welfare of their loved ones," the state attorney general said in a statement. A spokeswoman for Rite Aid said the company has ordered stores where outdated merchandise was found to remove those products immediately.
