In the third courthouse shooting incident in Georgia in less than 18 months, an inmate shot a sheriff's deputy Monday outside the Jackson County courthouse before being shot himself. According to the sheriff, a deputy was transporting inmates back to the jail when the inmate took the deputy's gun, shot him three times, and took control of a van -- all while wearing chains and leg irons. The injured deputy's wounds reportedly are not life-threatening; the inmate's condition was not immediately known.

A sheriff’s deputy and an inmate were shot Monday outside the Jackson County, Ga., courthouse after the deputy began transporting prisoners back to the jail following a court appearance.
Though constrained by chains and leg irons, the inmate took the deputy’s gun and shot him, then took control of the van before he was shot by other deputies about 4:30 p.m., Sheriff Stan Evans said.
