Marriage in the United States confers 1,138 federal rights, protections and responsibilities to the straight couples that choose to make their relationships legal. And since marriage is about economics as much as romance, having those legal protections is important, especially when property and children are involved. Attorney Jeff Cleghorn says constitutional bans on gay marriage could mean more business for lawyers handling gay family law because it's made gay people aware of how vulnerable they are.
