San Diego won Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy's backing Friday to leave a large cross standing on city property. The justice said a temporary stay he authorized earlier in the week should protect the cross until the 9th Circuit hears arguments this year in the long-running dispute. He also took the unusual step of explaining his decision, in a four-page opinion, and suggested that he and his colleagues may be interested in a broader review of the case.
