As long as I remember, there has been discussion on when, what and how to teach legal research. Even as a first-year law student, as I compared notes with my fellow students, we were aware that law schools differed in their approach and extent of their legal research programs. We knew that the quality of instruction varied greatly by instructor, even within schools.

However, we did understand what was expected of us and some conception of the framework of knowledge and research methodologies we were expected to learn.
