Legal challenges have begun to hinder the advance of nanotechnology. The first legal petition[FOOTNOTE 1] on the risks of nanotechnology was filed last month with the Food and Drug Administration by the International Center for Technology Assessment and a coalition of consumer, health and environmental advocacy groups.

Filed in conjunction with the release of a comprehensive report[FOOTNOTE 2] by Friends of the Earth on the alleged dangers of sunscreens and cosmetics containing nanoparticles, the 80-page petition requests that the FDA take regulatory action regarding products composed of engineered nanoparticles and calls for the immediate recall of nano-sunscreens.
