Many of the summer associates being brought on by Texas law firms this year will receive an additional $3,000 or more per session, compared with their counterparts in 2005. In another change, some firms are choosing to focus on hiring second-year law students. "We prefer to focus on 2Ls who are closer to making career decisions," says Haynes and Boone hiring partner Kathleen Beasley.

It wasn’t a traditional summer associate mixer: Vinson & Elkins summer associates met one another and some lawyers at the firm while packing boxes of food for needy families at the Houston Food Bank in April.
“It makes you think pretty highly of the firm if that’s how their lawyers are trying to meet interns and it’s how they have clerks meet each other,” says David Wall, a summer associate with V&E’s Houston office and soon-to-be third-year student at South Texas College of Law.
