In a plea agreement Monday, L.A. insurance lawyer Richard Purtich admits to taking payments from Milberg Weiss and passing them on to Steven Cooperman, an ophthalmologist who is the lead client in several Milberg Weiss securities class actions. The Milberg investigation began in 1999, when Cooperman told prosecutors he received kickbacks. The case came to a head Thursday, when the firm and two name partners were indicted over an alleged scheme to funnel kickbacks to lead plaintiffs.
