Much like other practices that don't command top dollar, environmental work is trickling to smaller firms, where billing rates can be 30 percent lower than at larger firms. But while small to midsize firms are taking advantage of the trend by recruiting attorneys from bigger firms, some take a different view of the numbers game. "Clients don't care what the billing rate is," says Morrison & Foerster's Michele Corash. "They care what it costs them to deal with a problem."
