A nun in the southern Indian state of Kerala will be allowed to practice as a lawyer without giving up her vows, a high court ruled Tuesday, overturning a legal body’s code that bars members of other professions from becoming attorneys.

Sister Teena Jose, a nun at the Kerala-based Congregation of Mother Carmel, applied to join the bar after graduating from law school last year only to her have her application rejected because the local law association does not allow people already working in another profession to join.
