A defendant on trial for murder in New York on Thursday stabbed his defense attorney, Mitchell J. Dinnerstein, under the chin with a homemade plastic weapon while his alleged accomplice tried to wrest a gun from a court officer, a court official said.

Dinnerstein was treated and appears to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries, said David Bookstaver, a spokesman for the Office of Court Administration.
