Tax preparer H&R Block agreed Wednesday to pay $62.5 million to settle class actions dealing with its use of refund anticipation loans. If approved by a judge, the settlement will resolve four class actions filed in West Virginia, Ohio, Alabama and Maryland, as well as resolving claims pending in 22 other states and the District of Columbia. Critics claim the loans preyed upon low-income households, immigrants and unsophisticated taxpayers who weren't adequately informed about the high interest rates.
