Hollinger's downward spiral began when shareholders raised allegations of improper dealings by executives, which were later investigated by a special committee. Torys was accused of not raising red flags over millions of dollars in "noncompete" fees that were paid to Hollinger executives.

Prominent law firm Torys LLP has agreed to pay Hollinger International Inc. $30.25 million to settle allegations that date back to Conrad Black’s time at the helm of the publisher.
“We are pleased that a settlement which includes no admission of wrongdoing on our part has been reached,” Torys said in a statement late Wednesday.
