Miami-based Akerman Senterfitt has opened a New York office with six shareholders. The group includes Marvin Pickholz and Jason Pickholz, who previously had their own father-and-son law firm specializing in securities law and white-collar crime. The other shareholders are Thatcher Stone, a specialist in Latin American transactions and a former partner at Alston & Bird; Lansing Palmer, previously a litigator in solo practice; Kenneth G. Alberstadt, formerly a corporate partner at Wollmuth Maher & Deutsch; and Martin Domb, a former litigation partner at Hills, Bett & Nash. The office will focus on corporate, real estate, litigation and Latin American practices. Akerman Senterfitt, which has 440 lawyers, is the latest Florida firm to open in New York, where Miami’s Greenberg Traurig and Tampa’s Holland & Knight both have established a large presence. The past year has seen a major wave of New York expansion by out-of-town firms that had previously avoided the market. Chicago’s Jenner & Block, Los Angeles’ Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton and Atlanta’s Kilpatrick Stockton have been among those aggressively building new outposts in Manhattan.
