Vitals: University of Oregon B.A., 1970, M.A., 1973. Lewis & Clark, J.D., 1979. Current job: Personal injury lawyer, arbitrator and mediator in Portland, Ore. My practice is now about 75 percent arbitration and mediation, and I expect to be full-time within the next year. Author: “How to Build & Manage a Personal Injury Practice” (1997, American Bar Association). Regular columnist (“Ask Bill”) for “Law Practice Magazine,” (American Bar Association’s Law Practice Management section). At the bar: Chair, ABA Law Practice Management section (2001-2002). Member, ABA Standing Committee on Publishing Oversight. Member, ABA Coordinating Committee on Legal Technology (1995-96). Office technology: Mac PowerBook G4 12-inch laptop. The Powerbook runs Windows XP via Virtual PC, but I occasionally need to borrow my wife Mary’s Dell laptop. One of my legal assistants uses a 15-inch Powerbook, the other uses an iMac. (I am the developer of De Novo Systems Inc.’s De Novo CaseMgr, which we use for case management.) We use both Corel Corp.’s WordPerfect and Microsoft Word for word processing. Home office: I carry my PowerBook back and forth to work and to all points in between. If I am out of the office, my staff scans the day’s mail and e-mails it to me. I then open it using Adobe Acrobat Pro, mark it up and e-mail it back to the office. Home ISP: I live in the country and cannot get cable or DSL. I have gotten by with ISDN for years, but recently switched to an ISP that sends a signal via transmitters located on nearby hillsides. So far, it has been faster, more reliable and cheaper than ISDN. Your next tech purchase: New desktop Mac to replace older iMac. Security blanket: New copier/scanner lets my staff scan documents as PDFs and e-mail to me where ever I am. PDA: Palm Zire. Cell: LG camera phone, which I use with Verizon wireless service. Favorite TV show: “The Daily Show.” All the HBO series (“Six Feet Under,” “Sopranos,” “Carnivale”). Letterman or Leno? Letterman. Favorite mode of transportation: Flying my Cessna 182. Last book read: “The Kite Runner,” by Khaled Hosseini. Where we would find you on a Saturday afternoon: Hauling bark dust for my wife’s garden, watching grandsons play soccer, flying around Mt. St. Helens. Appointment I never miss: Singing lesson once a week. (Sinatra and the standards.) Most important recent tech trends: Blogs, Adobe Acrobat Pro; greater bandwidth and fast Web access. Your most important tech accomplishment in last year: Learning Adobe GoLive and Photoshop for creating Web sites. Favorite URL: www.freewillastrology.com. Favorite search engine: Dogpile. Last vacation: Greek Islands, for our 25th anniversary. Favorite quote: “The earth has music for those who listen.” — William Shakespeare
