Merck researchers privately sought to alter Vioxx in 2000 to reduce its cardiovascular side effects, even as the drug maker publicly downplayed a study on potential heart attack risk. That's according to a company document mistakenly given to plaintiffs lawyers for one of the many Vioxx lawsuits around the country. The document is potentially among the most damaging to emerge since drug sales were suspended because it calls into question Merck's defense that officials were convinced of Vioxx's safety.
