Chief Justice William Rehnquist is a man of simple pleasures. He enjoys poker, a good book and all types of competition -- from charades to tennis to trivia. Perhaps most of all, he is a creature of habit. That trait has helped him make the Supreme Court a model of legal efficiency. If he retires in the coming weeks -- as many suspect -- Rehnquist will be remembered as a super-organized manager who kept harmony among his colleagues, no matter how polarizing the issue they were deliberating.
