Hoping to head off labor unrest, W.R. Grace & Co. has asked a judge for permission to contribute $7.9 million to two pension plans by September. The bankrupt chemical company said it would contribute $6.6 million to employees covered by the Lake Charles Union pension plan. The company’s manufacturing plant in Lake Charles, La., is its second largest in the United States. W.R. Grace would also contribute $1.3 million to its employees covered by its Chattanooga Union pension plan at its Chattanooga, Tenn., plant that produces materials for products made at the Lake Charles plant. W.R. Grace said it would use its available cash to make the contributions if the bankruptcy court agrees. The plans are two of nine plans the company maintains. Visiting Judge Judith K. Fitzgerald in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware in Wilmington has set a hearing on the matter for June 27. Columbia, Md.-based W.R. Grace filed for Chapter 11 protection April 2, 2001, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware in Wilmington. Copyright 2005 TDD, LLC. All rights reserved.
