A unanimous panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the inscription "In God We Trust" on the facade of a government building in North Carolina does not violate the U.S. Constitution's guidelines on the separation of church and state. In its decision, the court cited present and historical "patriotic uses" of the phrase, but said the inscription would be unconstitutional if it served a religious purpose.
