As a partner in the litigation group of New York’s Paul Weiss for more than six years, Roberta Kaplan has put her stamp on a number of recent significant cases. She is lead counsel in a case challenging New York state’s ban on same-sex marriage, handling the case pro bono. It is currently on appeal before the New York State Court of Appeals. Last year, she scored a significant victory in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Northern District of California, when she was the lead trial lawyer for the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) in litigation arising from the state’s energy crisis. Pacific Gas & Electric had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure its $13 billion in debt and was in dispute with CPUC over a resolution. The case was litigated for around three years, and Kaplan went up against Pacific Gas’ lead trial lawyer, Stephen Neal, the chairman of Palo Alto, Calif.’s Cooley Godward. Kaplan and the CPUC were ultimately victorious. Kaplan was also one of the Paul Weiss partners defending CitiGroup Inc. in the securities class action against it, arising from the research of Wall Street analyst Jack Grubman. The case settled for $2.65 billion. Kaplan also volunteered her services to file an amicus brief on behalf of a nonprofit organization of the city’s business leaders, Partnership for New York City, arguing that a strong public school system is vital to the city’s future.
