Michael Andrew Haggard won two $100 million verdicts in 2003, earning Florida’s largest personal injury verdicts twice in a row. In the first case, Haggard took a suit on behalf of a toddler who almost drowned in an apartment pool. The young girl was brain-damaged by the incident, and Haggard proved that the owner ignored a flimsy gate near the pool. Later that year, Haggard won a verdict for a Miami boy who almost drowned while snagged on an underwater pool pump. The boy was also brain-damaged by the accident, and died soon after the settlement. Following these victories, Haggard lobbied the Florida Builders’ Commission and the state Legislature to revise building safety codes and require more safety measures. Haggard has won other multimillion-dollar settlements in personal injury or wrongful death suits against Ecuacar Rental Corp., Village Apartments and the Park Plaza Hotel. In 2001, he co-led a lawsuit that earned a $21 million verdict for an elderly woman injured in a car accident — the other driver was distracted by a cellphone conversation. In 1997, Haggard joined this firm alongside his father, William Andrew Haggard. In addition to courtroom experience, Haggard is also the president of the Dade County Trial Lawyers Association.
