In an effort to establish itself in the marketplace as a competitor for top entry-level talent, McCarter & English has raised its starting salaries in its Philadelphia office from $100,000 to $115,000. Philadelphia office managing partner Alec Kerr said the recently announced change will be implemented when the next group of first-year associates join the Philadelphia office this coming fall. Kerr said the raises would only affect associates in the Philadelphia office, as those in other offices are paid between $100,000 and $105,000. He said the firm was still deciding what would happen to the salaries of more senior associates in Philadelphia. The New Jersey-based firm has 14 associates in its 24-lawyer Philadelphia office. “At this point we need to evaluate how this change is going to affect us,” Kerr said. “But I think it’s a good assumption that associates in their second and third years will make more money than first-years.” Kerr said he requested the change with the firm’s leadership in New Jersey. “We certainly conveyed what we needed to be competitive in this marketplace,” Kerr said, “and the rest of the firm has been quite supportive.” Kerr took over leadership of the office when he joined the firm two years ago from Hoyle Morris & Kerr. McCarter & English has more than 200 of its 330 attorneys located in its Newark, N.J., headquarters.
