The state American Civil Liberties Union plans to file a federal suit today against a Pennsylvania school district that requires instruction in alternatives to evolution. The ACLU said its suit will be the first to challenge whether public schools should teach "intelligent design," which says the universe is so complex that it must be a higher power's work. At least one other district is embroiled in similar litigation, with a Georgia federal judge weighing an evolution warning's constitutionality.
