A Briton who manufactured bogus Viagra and the tranquilizer diazepam and sold it internationally was sentenced Friday to 5 1/2 years in prison. Allen Valentine, 44, of Harrow, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply drugs and to two charges of contravening the Trade Marks Act and Medicines Act. Valentine was formerly a salesman for Pfizer Inc., which makes Viagra. Prosecutor Steven Perian said there was evidence of significant “connections” with India, where much of his equipment and base chemicals were bought, and the Far East. The operation, which continued for two years, could crank out half a million pills a day, prosecutors said. “It is a serious matter when the public are hoodwinked to the extent that such products, although structurally akin to the correct ones, are being produced in an environment without the necessary precautions … in a makeshift and potentially dangerous manner,” Judge Barrington Black said in Harrow Crown Court. Davin Pattni, 27, described as Valentine’s right-hand man, was sentenced to three years on two conspiracy counts. Paul Austin, 40, described by police as a low-level employee, was given a suspended 18-month sentence on a single conspiracy count. Copyright 2004 Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.
