Dealing a setback to the federal government's continued crackdown on illegal immigrants, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday ruled that authorities cannot immediately deport immigrants with prior deportation orders without giving them a hearing. While the ruling largely pertains to the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, the decision has greater resonance given the crackdown on illegal immigrants after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
