This year’s summer associatessurvey drew responses from 4,913 interns at 182 firms, 159 of whichqualified for the national rankings. The survey was conducted from late June toearly August. Surveys are distributed through the firms’ recruitingcoordinators, whom we contact in the spring about participation. Eligible summerassociates are second- and third-year law students clerking at firms for atleast three weeks during the summer. Respondents are guaranteed anonymity. Firms included in the NationalRankings are ones from which we received at least 10 completed surveys.Individual offices listed on the Resultsby City chart are ones from which we received at least five surveys. To determine scores for individual questions, we average respondents’ answerson a firmwide basis for the National Rankings chart and on a citywide basis forthe Results by City chart. All question averages are rounded to two decimalplaces. Scores for firms are calculated from those rounded question averages, and then rounded to three decimal places. The average of nine job satisfaction questions is used to determine a firm’soverall score on both charts. Scoring questions ask how interesting the work hasbeen, how much “real” work was assigned, how the training and guidancemeasured up, how positive their interactions with partners and associates were, how well the firm communicated its goals and expectations, how accurately thefirm portrayed itself in interviews, and the respondents’ inclination to accepta position if one were offered. The respondents are also asked to rate the firmoverall as a place to work. Composite scores are reported with three decimalplaces. Firms designated as “national” have no more than 45 percent oftheir lawyers in any single region of their home country. Firms designated as”international” have at least 40 percent of their lawyers workingoutside their home country. For detailed online reports for each firm thatqualified for the national rankings, please see the Ato Z charts. Please send requests for inclusion in the survey to [email protected]. Many thanks to all the firms and summer associates who participated in thisyear’s survey.
