Sand is deadly. Or it can be, at least when fine particles of silica, a natural component in most forms of sand, are inhaled over a long period, says a cancer research agency. About 24,000 silicosis injury claims, mostly by industrial workers, are pending against a major sand supplier. The sand industry isn't the only one facing such challenges. Other sellers of the most basic of products -- including soil and water -- also face litigation over their labels' language.
