John Ashcroft's Justice Department and the American Civil Liberties Union don't find themselves on the same side too often. But DOJ and ACLU Web sites focusing on the Patriot Act share a certain symmetry. On the DOJ site a banner reads, "Preserving Life and Liberty." On the ACLU site, the motto declares, "Keeping America Safe and Free." It's all part of dueling public relations campaigns that the Bush camp and its critics are waging as the controversial law comes up for renewal.
