A federal jury in Montgomery, Ala., awarded $1.28 billion Tuesday in a class action on behalf of up to 30,000 cattlemen, finding that the nation's largest beef packer, Tyson Fresh Meats Inc., had unfairly manipulated prices. Cattlemen from across the country filed suit in 1996 against Tyson, then known as IBP Inc., claiming the company used contracts with a select few producers to create a captive supply of cattle and depress prices.
