Any firm may participate in one or both of our associates surveys — the midlevel survey, which is reported here and in the October 2003 issue of the magazine, or the summer associates survey, which is reported in the November issue of Lmagazine — if the firm has 10 eligible participants firmwide. Our aim is to be inclusive and still maintain a reasonable degree of statistical significance. Eligible midlevels are third- or fourth-year associates at participating law firms. Eligible summer associates are law students clerking at firms during the summer for at least three weeks before filling out the survey forms. Respondents are guaranteed anonymity through the use of individual passwords. Firms that participated previously are contacted in the spring about the current year’s survey. Questionnaires or Web passwords are distributed to associates through their firms’ recruiting coordinators. The midlevel associates survey is conducted in May and June; the summer associates survey is conducted from late June to early August. Requests for inclusion and other questions may be directed to [email protected] . For a firm to be included in the “National Rankings,” we must receive at least 10 completed surveys. For an individual office to be included on the “Results by City” chart, we must receive at least five responses from that office. Surveys received after the deadline are not counted. For the chart “Rankings by Size,” the highest-grossing firms, according to our Am Law 100 and Global 100 rankings, are designated “extra-large”; Am Law Second Hundred firms are classified as “large”; and the remaining firms are deemed “midsize.” Firms designated as “national” have no more than 45 percent of their lawyers in any single region of their home country. Firms designated “international” have at least 40 percent of their lawyers working outside their home country. We revised and added to the scoring mix this year, based on comments gathered from last year’s survey. In response to an invitation for feedback about the survey and new questions we should ask, over 1,000 midlevels responded, and their ideas and questions were incorporated throughout this year’s questionnaire. The “Results by City” chart includes the results for the 12 questions that counted toward the composite score. We average respondents’ answers to the scoring questions on a citywide basis for the “Results by City” chart, and on a firmwide basis for the “National Rankings” charts. Additional questions are included in the survey to help provide a profile of associates nationwide, to track trends over the years, and to provide insight into a firm’s score and the differences between their participating offices. This year’s midlevel associates survey report is based on the responses of 4,070 midlevels from 211 participating firms (159 of which returned enough responses to be included in the national rankings). This represents a response rate of 37 percent. Individual firm reports (also known as “Firms A to Z”) appear on our Web site, americanlawyer.com . Many thanks to freelance researcher Lia Fernandez for her skillful assistance managing this year’s survey.
