D.C.-area law schools with loan repayment assistance programs are American University, Georgetown University, George Washington University, and the University of Maryland. Each program is unique both in terms of what jobs qualify and in the amount of assistance provided. While the needs still outpace the dollars, the good news is that local programs are improving. Georgetown University has the largest LRAP in the region, providing more than $500,000 per year in assistance. The law school recently improved its program to provide more benefits across the board, while awarding additional benefits to graduates working where the cost of living is high. George Washington University provides benefits to qualifying graduates with a certain “net” target income level. GW increased the target level two years ago by $5,000, resulting in a noticeable increase in the number of people eligible for the LRAP as well as the amount of support they are eligible to receive. American University’s Public Interest Loan Repayment Assistance Program recently adjusted its salary cap to provide more assistance to graduates living in high-cost areas. Other D.C.-area schools are in the process of creating LRAPs. Thanks to a substantial endowment gift, the University of Baltimore is starting a program this fall. We also understand that Catholic University intends to establish an LRAP. Currently, Howard University, George Mason University, and UDC do not offer LRAPs. For more information on LRAPs at law schools in both the D.C. area and nationwide, go to the Financing the Future page at www.equaljusticeworks.org.
