California Gov. Gray Davis' lawyers have filed a petition asking state justices to postpone a recall election until next year's primary and allow Davis to run as a possible successor candidate should voters approve the recall. Davis' lawyers want the court to decide whether voters will be disenfranchised if the recall effort proceeds. Some election law experts say the argument raises a legitimate constitutional issue that could give the governor his best chance yet to keep his job.
