Looking to geographically expand the reach of its labor and employment and insurance defense litigation practices, Philadelphia-based Harvey, Pennington, Cabot, Griffith & Renneisen has opened offices in Pittsburgh and San Francisco. The additions bring Harvey Pennington’s attorney count to more than 70. The firm has acquired a seven-attorney San Francisco firm called The Berkley Law Group. Berkley, headed by managing partner Daniel Berkley for 13 years, mainly represents clients in labor and employment law but also handles alternative dispute resolution, business litigation and transactions. Berkley’s practice is geared toward labor negotiations while the other partner in the group, Carol C. Copsey, handles employment litigation. The associates in the group are Melissa Calhoon, David J. Berman, Sheldon Michaels, Harry B. Maring and Lillian F. Wolf. “They are going to give us a much greater capability to cover a larger geographic area with more efficiency,” Harvey Pennington Chairman David Pennington said. “We have clients out there that they will help us to serve better. And from their perspective, they needed assistance with marketing so they can grow their practice.” The connection with the San Francisco group emanates from the relationship between Berkley and Harvey Pennington labor and employment chair Stephen Cabot, who were partners from 1976 to 1988 at Peckner Dorfman. Berkley ran the firm’s California office until the partners went their separate ways. “I always regretted my separation with Steve,” Berkley said. “But we always remained colleagues and friends and it just seemed like this would be a perfect time for us to begin to practice together again. It just seemed like it had the potential to be a dynamic combination.” Harvey Pennington also added four attorneys in Pittsburgh that handle litigation and labor and employment work. The civil litigation and insurance defense work will be handled by Deborah Olszewiski and Diane Barr Quinlin, each of whom represents large and midsize companies throughout western Pennsylvania and the midwest. They will be assisted by associate Rebecca Flick. Partner Jonathan Alder brings a labor and employment practice. “We have some mutual clients with the Pittsburgh group and we thought joining together would help us both in the med mal defense area,” Pennington said. Copsey focuses on labor and employment law and commercial litigation with clients in such industries as computers, telecommunications and financial services. She represents clients in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies. She is admitted to practice before the courts of California, Nevada and the District of Columbia. Olszewiski, a member of the Allegheny County Academy of Trial Lawyers in Pennsylvania, currently chairs its professionalism committee; in addition, she is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and chairs its civil litigation committee. She is a member of the Allegheny County and Pennsylvania bar associations. She has participated in insurance defense work since 1970, including professional liability matters for physicians, dentists and attorneys. Quinlin is a member of the Allegheny County Academy of Trial Lawyers and has served on the board of governors of the Allegheny County Bar Association. In addition, she is a member of the Pennsylvania and American bar associations. She is the opinion editor for the Pittsburgh Legal Journal. Her practice includes defense in the bone screw litigation, breast implant litigation and in cases involving off-label usage of medical drugs and devices. Alder has more than 30 years’ experience representing clients in all aspects of labor relations and employment law. He is a member of the labor law section of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and a member of such sections of the bar in Pittsburgh and Dallas as well as the American Bar Association. Alder is also legal counsel and managing partner of Creekside Mushroom Ltd. In addition to its Philadelphia site, Harvey Pennington has offices in New York City, Wilmington, Del., Cherry Hill, N.J., and Bryn Mawr, Pa. It specializes in labor relations and employment law, insurance defense, medical malpractice, banking and financial institutions, commercial and civil litigation, and business transactions.
