You are probably getting to the point where just about everything and everyone is making you crazy — pushing you right to the edge of your sanity. That’s completely normal for one week before the bar exam, but if you want to succeed, you have to get past it. If you walk into the bar exam tearing your hair out, you’re setting yourself up for failure (not to mention baldness). No one can function properly at such a high stress level. You probably won’t be able to achieve an optimal level of relaxation, but you owe it to yourself to do everything you can to CALM DOWN. The following list illustrates just a few methods that we (as two highly stressed women) recommend for surviving the bar exam. PRACTICE ACCEPTANCE You can’t know everything. No one can, and that’s just the way life is. Accept it. At this point, right before the bar exam, you’re probably not going to learn much new material. Now is the time to review and reinforce what you’ve already learned, so that you can be as comfortable as possible with that knowledge when you go into the exam. GET ORGANIZED Know your jurisdiction’s rules for testing procedures so you’re not caught off guard (i.e., unable to wear your lucky hat because hats are prohibited in your testing area). Find out ahead of time what you may and may not bring to the testing site and plan accordingly. EXERCISE AND BREATHE Everyone knows that physical activity is one of the best stress relievers around. Even if it is just a walk around the block, the fresh air and the distraction can be a world of difference in your perspective and productivity. QUIET TIME Take your mind off the stress and remember what is important. Rejuvenate yourself by meditating, taking a bubble bath, taking a walk — anything to nurture yourself. WATCH YOUR HABITS Stick with what you know works for you and your lifestyle, but don’t poison your mind and body with unhealthy attitudes and habits. Eat foods that nurture, and make it a point to rest your mind and eyes regularly. TALK TO FRIENDS Your energy is a precious commodity in the days leading up to the bar exam. You can’t afford to have negative or pessimistic people absorbing the little energy you have. You know who your friends are. Surround yourself with their support. LET IT GO Once you have taken the bar exam, let it go. If there is one time when you should be absolutely free of any worry, it is the period from “Pencils down!” to “You passed!” Keep in mind that this is not life or death. Whether you passed or failed, it’s only the bar exam. Amy Poggioli is the director of the editorial department, and Lesley Yosses is the legal editorial manager, at MicroMash Bar Review. MicroMashpublishes the leading computer-based review course for the multistate bar exam, and state-specific bar review courses for 25 jurisdictions. Both Poggioli and Yosses are licensed to practice law in Colorado.
