In the second blow in a week to Greenberg Traurig and a significant boost to Hunton & Williams, seven Greenberg associates have left the firm to follow six partners to Hunton’s Miami office. The associates all worked with the partners in Greenberg’s international and corporate division, and will continue to focus on that area in their new jobs. They are all multilingual. Since opening a Miami office two years ago, Hunton has aggressively recruited lawyers from other firms in a bid to become a major player in the South Florida market. The recent additions from Greenberg boost the number of lawyers on the Hunton roster from 30 to 43. Marty Steinberg, managing partner of Hunton’s Miami office, says the recruits are part of the firm’s plan to become a full-service law firm in Miami. He hopes the office will some day rival Hunton’s primary offices in New York, Washington and Atlanta, which have nearly 100 lawyers each. Toward that end, the firm last week took over three floors in the Barclay Center at 1111 Brickell Ave. in Miami. Steinberg insists he is not targeting Greenberg Traurig lawyers. “Our method has been to cherry-pick the best lawyers in town,” he said. Cesar Alvarez, managing partner of Greenberg, said the resignations were expected. “The associates worked almost exclusively with the shareholders that left, and, in these cases, associates normally leave with their shareholders,” he said. “We wish them well.” The associates would not comment on their reasons for leaving Greenberg. However, Fernando C. Alonso, the former co-head of Greenberg’s international practice and one of the partners who moved to Hunton, said the associates were all offered jobs when the partners left Greenberg earlier this month. One Greenberg associate who was also offered a job at Hunton is still considering the offer, he said. Speaking for himself, Alonso, a 17-year Greenberg employee, said he had no frustrations at Greenberg and while the financial offer was better at Hunton, that’s not why he left Greenberg. “This was an opportunity to build one of the top firms in Florida,” he said. “Greenberg is a stupendous law firm and I hope to continue my friendship with Cesar.” All their clients have moved to Hunton with them, he added. The new Hunton associates are: Anna Oestereicher, who will focus on corporate and securities law; Rafael Prohias, who will focus on corporate and securities; Edward Acle, who will focus on corporate matters; Juan Azel, who will focus on general corporate matters; Carol Fernandez, who will focus on general corporate and securities matters; John Haley, who will focus on mergers and acquisitions; and Patricia M. Sanchez, who will focus on international corporate matters.
