Before the “.biz” and “.info” landrush begins, a business should consider a strategy for defining its domain name presence on the Internet: 1. Appoint a domain name manager. This is critical to a rationale domain name management program. Several domain name registrars also offer domain name management services on an outsourced basis. 2. Compile and maintain a complete list of the business’ target domain names. These should include the business’ current trademarks, “.biz” and “.info” domain names identical to the business’ current “.com” domain names, and any new domain names desired for expanding the business on the Internet or for other purposes. 3. Select a registrar or registrars to place domain names in the queue for registration. 4. Register all trademarks under the “.biz” IP Claims Service. 5. Submit applications for desired trademark-related domain names with complete and accurate information on a timely basis. 6. If necessary, police and contest conflicting registrations using the STOP for “.biz” and the Sunrise challenge procedure for “.info.” Christopher K. Aidun is a partner and Faith F.
