In an effort to bolster its presence in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Arter & Hadden has named Kim West to the newly created position of chairman of the two offices. West, based in the firm’s 24-attorney San Francisco office, said he will direct Arter’s marketing and strategic planning. “We have some outstanding trial lawyers,” West said. “Unfortunately we’ve not done a good job marketing ourselves.” He said the Cleveland-based firm plans to create teams and market them to California companies. “They don’t need to pay $500 per hour,” West said. “We offer the same value.” He said Arter’s best litigation partners offer services in the $350 to $400 range. The San Francisco office focuses on complex and consumer class actions and white-collar crime litigation. West acknowledged that office chairman is an odd title. But he said it is intended to reflect his authority while showing respect for the managing partners of the two offices. Mark Solomon retains the head position as national managing partner of the 400-attorney firm. At the beginning of the year, Arter restructured its Los Angeles office, giving pink slips to 16 partners and associates. At the time, the firm said it was retooling the office to focus on its core practices in professional and product liability litigation, environmental and commercial litigation and corporate securities. The office now has approximately 60 attorneys. West joined Arter’s Los Angeles office in 1991 and moved to the San Francisco outpost in 1997. Prior to joining Arter he had his own firm for three years. He began his career at the now defunct Los Angeles firm Adams, Duque & Hazeltine after graduating from Duke University School of Law in 1977.
