The Atlanta, Ga., office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has accused BellSouth Telecommunications Inc. of firing one of its female staff members because of her age. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. BellSouth Telecommunications, No. 1:01-CV-0803 (N.D. Ga. March 29, 2001). The suit claims that BellSouth violated the Age Discrimination in Employment Act when it discharged employee Deborah Caldwell, 50. The claim, filed by Steven M. Tapper, an EEOC senior trial attorney, asks for a permanent injunction to prevent BellSouth from terminating employees who are 40 or older because of their age.
