Less than a year has passed since Alan C. Milstein filed suit on behalf of a family whose 18-year-old son died during a gene-therapy experiment at the University of Pennsylvania. Since then, Milstein has been involved in a half-dozen lawsuits against big-name medical research institutions. The suits, coming just as public confidence in clinical trials has been shaken, have sent shudders through the biomedical community.
