Julius Glickman Managing Partner Glickman & Hughes, Houston When Roger Sims finally turned to Julius Glickman for help with his employment suit, he had been turned down by five other firms and things looked bleak. Then Glickman, who mainly practiced business and general civil litigation, decided to take the case. It was a smart move for both. In 1989, a district court jury in Houston returned a $31 million verdict in favor of Sims, an accountant who claimed he had been wrongfully terminated from his job. That started Glickman in the employment law field, and Sims v. Kaneb wasn’t his only big verdict. He also won $125 million in the wrongful-termination case of Janacek v. Triton Energy in Dallas. Both cases eventually settled out of court under confidentiality agreements. A 1966 UT Law School graduate, Glickman began his legal career at a New York City firm, then spent two years as an administrative aide to Congressman Bob Eckhardt of Texas. In 1972, he returned to Texas and started his own firm. He began with civil trial work, then worked in antitrust law and real estate litigation. Working in employment law was a natural progression, he says. Glickman, 60, usually represents plaintiffs and sometimes defendants, but “always on the side of justice,” he says. He’s handled all kinds of different employment and business cases, from defamation to tortuous interference to breach of contract. “One of the nice things about trial practice is that you get to enjoy different kinds of cases,” he says. The employment cases can be the most emotional, he says. “These people have had their lives economically destroyed,” Glickman says. “It’s immensely satisfying when you can put them back on their feet and get their confidence back.”
