Questioning a police officer on the witness stand, defense attorney Tonia Rivera asked with an inflection of surprise in her voice: “You didn’t investigate anyone other than [the defendant]?” She then interrupted the response with a curt “it’s a yes or no question.”

The exchange was remarkable given the age of Rivera and the officer, Sandra Phonseya. The two seniors at San Francisco’s Mission High School were practicing for a statewide mock trial competition that took place this past weekend. The Mission High team of 21 students held their practice session at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison’s offices last Thursday night.
