Leonard A. Gail, 37, has joined Bank One Company as a senior vice president and deputy general counsel, where he will head the litigation and regulatory group. He was previously a partner at Chicago’s Bartlit Beck Herman Palencher & Scott. He received his J.D. cum laude from Harvard University in 1988. Michael Hancock has joined Paris’ Salans Hertzfield & Heilbronn as a partner in its technology and telecommunications practice. He was previously the general counsel of Alcatel CIT. He received his J.D. from the University of California Hastings School of Law in 1976. Los Angeles’ Paul, Hastings, Janofsky, & Walker has hired John M. Genga as a partner focusing on copyright, entertainment and intellectual property litigation and counseling. He was previously a partner at Los Angeles’ Troop, Steuber, Pasich, Reddick & Tobey. He received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1986. Hogan & Hartson has hired J. Michael Thesz, 56, as counsel to the firm’s intellectual property group in Washington, D.C. He was previously of counsel at Philadelphia’s Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in D.C. He received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1973. Also joining the firm, as an associate, is Naomi Voegtli, 36. She was previously an associate at Morgan Lewis and will work mostly with software clients on patent litigation and prosecution matters. She received her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1997. Martin Karlinsky, one of the founders and the former managing partner of the now-defunct boutique Camhy Karlinsky & Stein, has joined New York’s Rosenman & Colin’s commercial litigation department. Karlinsky, 50, received his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1976. Laura A. LoBianco has joined Phoenix’s Brown & Bain as an associate, where she will focus on corporate law and transactional matters. She was previously a senior attorney at Iridium North America. She received her J.D. cum laude from the School of Law at Santa Clara University. Birmingham, Ala.’s Lange, Simpson, Robinson & Somerville has hired Elizabeth (Betsy) Jones Hemby as an associate. She received her J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1999. She received her LL.M. in taxation from New York University this year. Her areas of practice include pension and benefits law, taxation law, and estate planning. BIG HIRES Holland & Knight has hired four attorneys to its real estate department, including three attorneys from Washington, D.C.’s Wilkes Artis. Whayne S. Quin joins the firm as a partner. He was previously the chairman and president of Wilkes Artis and will continue his work in land use law. He received his J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1964. Paul J. Kiernan, 42, was a partner at Wilkes Artis. He focuses his practice on real property litigation, land use and municipal law. He received his J.D. cum laude from Harvard in 1983. Marc E. Miller, 31, was an associate at Wilkes Artis. He joins the firm as an associate in the litigation department. He received his J.D. from George Washington University in 1995. PROMOTION Richard Jordan, 46, has been elevated to partner at San Francisco’s Morrison & Foerster Washington, D.C. office. He was previously of counsel and focuses on patent issues, including patent preparation and prosecution, interference, and preparation of patent infringement and validity opinions. He received his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law in 1991.
