THOMAS BUCKNUM, VICE PRESIDENT, GENERAL COUNSEL, AND SECRETARY, BIOGEN INC. THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT: Former scientist Bucknum oversees 13 lawyers for the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotechnology pharmaceutical giant. The legal team works in specialty areas, including corporate, intellectual property, government relations, and international law. THE BOOK: Bucknum recently read Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters by Matt Ridley. “While most of the current articles and stories about the sequencing of the human genome talk about the world of possibilities that lies before us, Ridley goes in the other direction,” says Bucknum. “He brings the human genome to life through a mix of history, science, and human interest. With a chapter for each chromosome with titles like Fate, Intelligence, Immortality, Sex, Memory, Politics, and Death, this book is a compelling read.” MORTON GOLDER, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL, UNIGROUP INC. THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT: Golder heads the legal team at Fenton, Missouri-based Unigroup, the holding company of United Van Lines and Mayflower Van Lines, two of the nation’s largest moving companies. Though the two companies are business rivals, Golder claims that their legal interests do not conflict. He oversees seven lawyers specializing in corporate, finance, contract work, and intellectual property. THE BOOK: Golder recently read Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan by Edmund Morris. In this biography, Morris injects fictional characters into historical events. Golder says it’s “an excellent historic, insider view of the president and…the White House.” Also on Golder’s bookshelf is Shadow: Five Presidents and the Legacy of Watergate by Bob Woodward, which he says is a “good historic perspective of various political leaders.” PATRICK DONNELLY, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, GENERAL COUNSEL, AND SECRETARY, SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO INC. THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT: New York-based Sirius is launching a trio of satellites that will send 100 channels of music, news, and talk into cars equipped with special receivers. Traded on Nasdaq, the new company of 135 employees has yet to produce revenue. With in-house cohort attorney Douglas Kaplan, Donnelly oversees such matters as agreements with satellite manufacturers, automakers, and content providers. THE BOOK: Donnelly and his 7-year-old daughter have just finished Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling. “It was just a fun read for my family,” Donnelly says. “I chose it because it was a way for me to spend time with my daughter.” MICHAEL SIMON, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL, RAZORFISH INC. THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT: A former director of legal affairs for Polygram Records, Simon oversees five lawyers (one each in Boston, New York, London, San Francisco, and Stockholm) at this New York-based Internet consulting firm. Areas of practice include intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, and litigation. THE BOOK: Simon has just finished The Keys to the Kingdom: How Eisner Lost His Grip by Kim Masters. Simon says, “I love the book…In my practice, I am singularly focused on resolving the challenges faced by Razorfish. Sometimes it’s refreshing to be reminded that certain of our challenges aren’t unique and have been resolved by others.”
