Sept. 28, 1973 Barbara Gibbons, 51, of Falls Village is brutally murdered Sept. 29, 1973 Peter Reilly confesses to murder after hours of interrogation, and is arrested March/April 1974 Reilly is convicted of first-degree manslaughter. He is sentenced to 6-16 years in prison. 1974 Riley recants his confession and critics charge that state troopers had coaxed the statement out of an exhausted, confused teenager. 1975 A new trial is granted to Reilly but never held. Testimony surfaces that demonstrates Reilly would not have had time to commit the crime. The statements had been kept from Reilly’s lawyer for three years. November 1976 Manslaughter charge dismissed. One month later Judge Maurice J. Sponzo is named a one-man grand jury to investigate possible crimes involving the arrest of Reilly. June 1977 Grand jury report virtually clears Reilly, but castigates state police and chief state’s attorney for mishandling inquiry. October 1977 State announces it will not prosecute Reilly and the case is still considered open. November 1977 Motion granted clearing Reilly and barring his re-prosecution on the manslaughter charge. 2000 State police confirm that Reilly has requested DNA testing be performed on hair samples found in his mother’s fingers on the night of the murder.
