Beverly B. Martin’s recommendation to the federal bench has cleared another hurdle, giving hope to Sen. Max Cleland, D-Ga., that the Senate finally may fill the vacancy.

Patricia Murphy, Cleland’s press secretary, says the White House has completed its investigation of the Macon, Ga.,-based U.S. Attorney’s background and on Monday sent the file to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
