In the past, the exalted status of partnership was too often reserved for those who carried certain qualifications. Historically, women and minorities were often deemed to lack those qualifications and therefore were denied advancement to partnership status. In response, various state and federal statutes were enacted and have evolved to remove (at least in theory) the “glass ceilings” that prevented “employees” from advancing to the rank of “partner” in business organizations, and the discrimination that those employees might face at work.
