“Law of the Super Searchers: The Online Secrets of Top Legal Researchers”, T.R. Halvorson’s new book, is a collection of personal interviews with eight acknowledged experts in the field of legal research. The goal was to draw from the experiences of researchers working in law firms, legal academia, and continuing legal education to give, as the editor’s preface promises, “a sense of how expert researchers think.” That promise is met by this collection. The format of the book is primarily questions and answers. During the course of each interview, Halvorson, a practicing attorney, begins with the basic question, “How did you get into legal research?” He then continues to draw entertaining stories from the experts about getting started in the field and how they approach legal research in their jobs. Through his questions, Halvorson elicits how research requests typically come to each expert and the expert’s preferences in handling requests, while keeping the spotlight on topics essential to lawyers and legal researchers. The focus, through many of the interviews, is on electronic sources (LEXIS-NEXIS, Westlaw, CD-ROMs, and the Internet), but print sources are mentioned as well. Using the interviewee’s comments, Halvorson highlights how each expert keeps up-to-date with legal research resources, the expert’s favorites among resources, special projects that the expert may be involved in, and how each expert evaluates research findings. At the end of each interview, readers are treated to a list of each expert’s tips called “Super Searcher Secrets.” In addition to the interviews, the book includes two useful appendixes. One is a categorized “laundry” list of the Internet sites referred to by the interviewees, complete with Web addresses. The second appendix is a glossary of terms that appear during the course of the interviews. “Law of the Super Searchers” is a successor to two earlier works, “Secrets of the Super Searchers” and “Secrets of the Super Net Searchers,” both written by Reva Basch, who is the editor of this collection. Basch’s plan with this title and planned future works in this series is to focus on a specific subject discipline and draw on the experiences of researchers who primarily work in that discipline. Based on the usefulness and entertaining quality of this book, legal researchers may find others in the series useful as well. The publisher, Information Today, Inc., maintains a Web site with information on the entire series of super searcher books. Also at this site, you will find an updated list of legal research links based on the appendix in Law of the Super Searchers: The Online Secrets of Top Legal Researchers. This book is highly recommended reading for everyone who devotes much of their work to researching law. From the novice to the more experienced, every legal researcher can gain valuable insights from the experiences of the experts interviewed. I recommend that this book be added to the professional collection in all types of law libraries as educational reading for their staffs.
