Arnold & Porter has appointed a new managing partner as part of a re-structuring of its London management team. Fern O’Brian — formerly the firm’s administrative partner — has been appointed head of the London office. She will replace Bob Winter, who has returned to Washington for personal and professional reasons after three years in London. He will continue to practice as part of the firm’s U.S. corporate group. Anti-trust partner Tim Frazer takes on the role of administrative partner, reporting directly to O’Brian. O’Brian, who will be known within the firm as the Responsible Partner, says: “Bob was dividing his time between Washington and London and decided to go back fulltime.” Adds O’Brian, “We have been on an aggressive growth spurt for some time and we intend to grow further to advise our U.S. and European clients, particularly on the commercial and regulatory side.” The London office has grown to 20 lawyers, five of whom are partners. O’Brian is now the only U.S. qualified partner. The firm has made telecommunications and IT key practice areas, aided by the recruitment this year of Michael Ryan from Coudert Brothers and Ian Kirby from DLA.
