It was one of the more sensational stories of the decade: Sportscaster and ex-football great Frank Gifford caught on videotape in an intimate encounter with a Delray Beach flight attendant. That Frank’s spouse, daytime TV’s Kathie Lee, had rhapsodized endlessly about her All-American husband and family only added to the spectacle.

Since the first of dozens of stories on the tryst appeared in May 1997, however, the scandal of Gifford’s affair has given way to a no less sensational controversy over the lengths to which the Boca Raton-based Globe tabloid went to tackle the former All-Pro running back and humiliate his wife.
